Ollama Download: Run AI Models on Your Own Computer

Most people meet artificial intelligence through a website: type a question, wait for the answer, and hope you did not paste anything private. Ollama offers a different route. It is a free tool that lets you download and run large language models directly on your own computer, so your prompts do not need to leave the machine.

Ollama simplifies what used to be a fiddly process. You install the application, open a terminal, and pull a model with a single command. It then runs locally and can also serve a simple local interface that other apps can connect to. Developers use it for testing and building projects, while curious users enjoy experimenting with different open models for writing, summarising and coding help.

The privacy benefit is real. Notes, drafts and documents can be processed offline, which suits people handling sensitive material. There are no per-message fees, and once a model is downloaded you can use it without an internet connection.

But be honest about the demands. Models are large, often several gigabytes each, so check your storage. Performance depends heavily on your hardware: a computer with a capable graphics card and enough memory will feel responsive, while an older laptop can be slow. Smaller local models are also generally less capable than the biggest cloud-based assistants, so expect weaker answers on difficult tasks.

To get started, download the installer for Windows, macOS or Linux from the official site, install it, and try a small model first to see how your computer handles it. Check each model's licence before using it commercially, and always verify outputs, because local models can still make mistakes. Only use the official download page.
