How to Clean Install an NVIDIA Graphics Driver

A clean install removes old driver files and settings before putting the new driver in place. It is useful when you have crashes, strange visual glitches or leftover problems from past updates.

The simplest method is built into NVIDIA's installer. Download the driver from NVIDIA's official site, run it and choose Custom (Advanced) instead of Express. On the next screen, tick Perform a clean installation, then continue. Your PC screen may blink during the process, which is normal.

For a deeper clean, many users rely on a free third-party tool called Display Driver Uninstaller. Download the latest driver first, boot Windows into Safe Mode, run the tool and remove the NVIDIA driver, then restart and install the new one. Note that a clean install resets custom settings in NVIDIA Control Panel, so write down any you care about, such as colour or scaling options. Always create a restore point beforehand, just in case.
