Apple Keeps Improving the Phone App: What Is New in iOS 27

One of the iPhone's oldest apps is still being updated. 9to5Mac published an article on 18 October titled Apple keeps making the Phone app better, along with a note on how. I have only seen the headline, so I do not know the specific changes covered, and I will not guess at them.

The Phone app is used by almost every iPhone owner, so even small improvements can matter. Over recent years, Apple has added features such as call screening, live voicemail, spam filtering and better contact management, and it has redesigned the interface several times. Wikipedia's summary of iOS 27 mentions new apps including Phone and Games, along with a Liquid Glass design, suggesting that the Phone app has been a focus of the release.

A separate 9to5Mac article describes iOS 27's new Impersonation Risk Detection feature, which is meant to help protect against scams and is off by default. It is not clear from the headlines whether that feature is part of the Phone app, but the two stories show that call-related safety is a priority. Scam calls remain a problem worldwide, including in Malaysia, where police have reported rising online fraud.

If you want to make the most of the Phone app, spend a few minutes in Settings to explore options for silencing unknown callers, filtering spam, setting up voicemail and managing favourites. Review which features are turned on by default and which require you to enable them. After a major update, it is also worth checking that your carrier's features, such as Wi-Fi calling, still work. Watch for further changes in iOS 27.2, which is already in beta and is expected to bring new features to several apps.
