Assisted GPS navigation systems

Motorists in Malaysia are starting to rely on GPS navigation systems. But these systems occasionally fail in underground car parks or inside tunnels. Here how Assisted GPS comes to the rescue. Traditional GPS relies on line-of-sight with orbiting satellites. But in a city this may not always be possible. So when you try to wedge between two skyscrapers, or drive inside tunnels on the expressway, you’ll notice that the satellite signal weakens, and your GPS unit is unresponsive or dies completely.

New GPS devices and cell phones support a feature called Assisted GPS [ to minimize disruption in navigation services. A-l complements traditional GPS and relies heavily on the grid of cell communication towers to compute your exact location. So when the satellite is momentarily out of reach, A-GPS takes over.

In this article we’ll explain how a cell phone uses the A-GPS feature. Some phones use three different systems to determine its location: GPS, A-GPS, and Wi-Fl hotspots. Theoretically, a device could use any of these navigation systems independently, without relying on the other two. Of course, you get accurate and faster results when using complementing navigation systems such as GPS with A-GPS.

The Assistance Server is the key component in an A-GPS system. The server [ is set up by the carrier) communicates with the cellular network. It receives your location from the cellular network and relays it to your phone. The cellular towers and base stations also have GPS receivers and communicate with the satellites. So the assistance server also relays this information to the GPS receiver in your phone. Your phone communicates with the Assistance server via its GPRS connection.

One who uses A-GPS enjoys the following benefits. When he switches on the phone, it takes a shorter time to first fix with the satellite. That means it gets the orbit and clock data from the satellites quicker. Secondly, less processing is required from the OPS receiver, thus saving battery life. Of course, the biggest advantage is location information indoors.

Image Editing:How to produce bright colors

You took out your camera, focused, and clicked a photograph without checking the settings. Unfortunately, the lifeless picture you see later on your PC shows that the camera had been manually set for a different type of light situation.

THE PROBLEM: A member of the CHIP photo team once captured the beautiful ambience of clouds in the sky with the help of a wide-angle lens. But the picture was completely underexposed causing the colors to be lifeless. Another problem was that due to the extreme setting of the lens, the horizon looked bent out of shape.

PHOTOGRAPH DIFFERENTLY:

It’s not just faulty manual settings that produce such results—even some fully automatic cameras have a dull light problems with subjects of this type. The best thing would be to try out several options. For landscape shots, the AV mode ‘aperture priority’ is suitable. Set a high aperture value in order to obtain a high depth of field. If the exposure of the camera is short, ensure a longer exposure time for a result like the second picture.

All SLR cameras and many compact models with a manual mode offer suitable setting options. Since assessing the picture on the camera display is naturally difficult due to the surrounding light, the best thing to do is to take plenty of pictures of the same subject with different parameters. Many devices can do that automatically using an apertur range.

PHOTO OPTIMIZATION ON THE PC:

Weak spots in a picture can be removed on the PC. Using ‘Image I Adjustments I Levels’ in Photoshop, you can identify whether the photo is underexposed—in the example at hand, the tonal value is accumulated in the left half of the picture. Drag the white regulator from the right edge to the middle—spreading the tone like this considerably brightens the picture. At the same time, it enhances the colors. However, use caution in doing this. In case of intense brightening, even the hues shift, which can sometimes be disturbing.

You can avoid this by selecting ‘Luminance’ as the filling method in the layer palette. In order to strengthen the selected individual colors, use the ‘Image I Adjustments I Selective color’ tool. In our example here, an increase in the saturation for yellow, green and blue hues makes a great difference. In order to make the picture crisp, sharpen it with ‘Filter I Sharpen I Unsharp mask’.

Microsoft Photo Editor-How to start application again with a window open

For quite some time now, the program has not been functioning when opened— its button appears in the taskbar, but nothing else works. What is wrong?

Programs like Photo Editor write the data for size and position of the program window in the tab while closing. By doing so, the application should appear exactly as it did while closing, the next time you open it. If false values are entered in the tab for this data after a program crash or by Windows for example, it can lead to the described effects. In this case, you have to delete the incorrect data so that the application can be seen on screen again. We will need to correct the values in the Registry editor, which is accessible from‘Start I Run I regedit’.

Next, open the key ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Sofware\ Microsoft\Photo Editor\3.O\Microsoft Photo Editor’ in the Registry editor. The specification ‘3.0’ describes the version and may be different on your system. When you open the key, delete the entry ‘InitialPosition’ in the right side of the window.

After that, close the tab and restart Photo Editor. The program window should now appear and respond as usual. While closing Photo Editor, it saves a new set of specifications for the size and position of its window on your desktop.

How to discontinue auto marking emails as read for Outlook XP, 2003, 2007

While browsing through new messages using the arrow keys, Outlook immediately marks the emails as read, even though you aren’t done with them.

With its default setting in place, the application tags new messages as read even if the user is only clicking through them. But this behavior can easily be changed. Go to ‘Tools --> Options’ and switch to the ‘Other’ tab.

Click the ‘Reading Pane' under the ‘Reading Pane' panel and remove the check mark in front of Mark Item as read when selection changes in the succeeding dialog box. Confirm your changes and exit the box by clicking‘OK’. From now on Outlook will change of the new messages only when you open and read it by double click or by pressing Enter button.Or also by click on it and select 'Mark as read' in the context menu.

Excel 2007 Upgrade:Import calculation from old Excel version

While upgrading to Excel 2007, you imported calculations from older Excel documents. However, the import wasn’t 100 percent successful and you get the error message #NAME?’ in some cells.

The problem occurs if you have used analysis functions such as ‘CONVERT’, ‘CALENDAR WEEK’ or ‘MROUND’ in the calculation, which you had to activate earlier as using a plug-in. These functions continue to be supported and are now available even directly. But Excel first looks for the plug-in and therefore displays an error message when it can’t find it.With a simple trick, Excel 2007 replaces the incorrect formula in spreadsheet calculations.

Correcting many cells with the same error is really cumbersome. However, you can make Excel reinsert all functions with a simple trick. To do this, select the ‘Home’ tab in the Ribbon bar, then right click ‘Find and Select’ and select ‘Replace’. One character that appears in all functions is the ‘equal to’ sign. Since you do not wish to change anything else, replace it with itself. Thus enter ‘=‘ in both the combination fields respectively and then click ‘Replace all’. That way, Excel replaces all function definitions in the table and now displays correct results.

If only one cell needs to be corrected, select it for editing with the [ key, make your changes, and then press [ With that, Excel looks for the function again and displays the correct result.

How to insert adresses for mass mailing for Word XP, 2003

Users who frequently send emails and address them to lists made with Excel or Access might encounter problems. For example, problems occur if the first
name of the addressee is missing from the database.

The conformity of the address to a template is hard to manage if the first name of the addressee is missing. The reason for that is the blank space that normally separates first and last names. But you can easily correct this. While writing your email, keep in mind that Word has a ‘Mail Merge’ function.

To access it, right-click near a visible toolbar and place a check mark in front of ‘Mail Merge’ in the context menu. Now, position the cursor in the place where you want the first and last name of the addressee to appear. Then go to ‘Insert I Field ‘, pick the category ‘Mail Merge’ from the drop down list, and select ‘MergeField’ from the Field names list. Uncheck the ‘Text to be inserted after’ option to confirm that the field is not followed by a blank space. Alternatively, you can click the ‘Insert Merge Fields’ button on the Mail Merge toolbar.

Next, click the ‘Insert Word Fields’ icon on the toolbar and select If... Then Else’ from the context menu. In the following dialog box titled IF’, select the ‘First name’ entry in the ‘Field name’ combination box. Under ‘Comparison’, opt for ‘is not blank’. Subsequently, place the cursor in the ‘Then insert this text’ field and press the [ to enter a blank space. The condition implies that Word will insert a blank space in case the mail merge has been allocated a ‘First name’. This character separates the first and last names from now on. Insert the field ‘Otherwise insert this text’ in the ‘Condition field’ dialog: ‘IF’ remains blank. The text entered here uses the word processor if testing the condition leads to a negative result. Thus, it will be applied if there is no ‘First name’. However, Word should not do anything in this case.

Under ‘Comparison’, the application also offers other options such as ‘Equal to’, ‘Not equal to’ and ‘Less than’. In order to set the value with which the application should be compared to the content of the field name, use ‘Compare with’. Confirm with ‘OK’. Subsequently, insert the mail merge field ‘Last name’ again without a blank space.
The final result of this tweaking will ensure that only if a record of first and last names is available while sending the email, then Word will separate both components with a blank space from the field ‘Otherwise insert this text’.
NOTE: In our tests, Word 2007 automatically did without the blank space in records without first names. However, even this version has the option of defining different text inputs for mass mails, with the help of conditions. Open the corresponding dialog in the Ribbon bar with ‘Control’ in the ‘Programs’ tab.

Windows Xp, Vista: Managing file faster using tabs

QTTabBar is a free application that enables Windows Explorer to sho,’, different directory structures in tabs. We will show you how the tool can be used to increase your efficiency.

INSTALLING AND SETTING UP:

The program you need to download is a free plug-in called ‘QTTabBar’ from the website qttabbar.wikidot.com. On the website, follow the ‘Download’ link and select ‘version 1.2.2.1’. Save the archive ‘QTTabBar’j.2.2.1_glb.zip’ and unpack it to the directory you want. In order to ensure that the tool works, the Microsoft NET Framework from version 2.0 or above has to be installed on your system. You can download the .NET Framework from its official website at www.microsoft.com.

Start the installation by running ‘QTTabBar.exe’. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and select the command ‘Run as Administrator’ or ‘Run as’, select an appropriate user account with administrator rights and authorize the installation with your password. Now run the setup process and restart your system. Open Windows Explorer and select the menu item ‘View I Toolbars I QTTabBar’ to enable it. Next, uncheck the option ‘View I Toolbars I Lock the Toolbars’ and move the tabs below the address bar.

USING TABBED BROWSING IN EXPLORER:
You can add a new tab by right-clicking on an existing one and selecting the context command ‘Clone this’. This will open up a new tab, which will display the same folder structure as the original one. However, you can move in both of them independent of each other through the folder structure.

If you want a tab to display the contents of a particular folder every time it’s opened, select the context command ‘Lock’. A small lock icon on The tab symbolizes the protection. If you navigate to a new folder in such a ab on the right or left side of the page, a new tab page will be displayed for it automatically. ‘Unlock’ will remove the protection.

Several commands are available for closing the tabs: ‘Close Right Tab’, ‘Close Left Tab’, ‘Close’ and ‘Close all but this’. The last two commands are particularly useful since they close only the current tab or all except the current tab. In order to move or copy a file between two folders opened in different tabs, simply drag and drop its icon from the source tab into the target tab. A small window will inform you about the ‘Move’ or ‘Copy’ action. You can switch between tabs using the [Ctrl] key.

TIP: Copy the entire path of the folder in the current tab to the clipboard using the ‘Copy Path’ context command.

USING ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
You can define folder groups in order to display them simultaneously in different tabs for certain tasks. The easiest way to do this is to open all the required folders in different tabs, right click on any one tab and then select ‘Create New Group’. Name the group in the subsequent dialog box and enable the ‘Add all tabs’ option. Confirm with ‘OK’. To use a group, right click next to the tab, select ‘Groups’ and the desired entry in the subsequent submenu. With ‘Add to Group’, you can add other directories to the ones opened before. You will have to open the ‘@TTabBar options’ dialog box to delete a group. Now select the entry and click on the minus sign on the ‘Groups’ tab.

PURGING THE SYSTEM:

You can delete the following file types from the hard disk without any loss: BAK, CHK, GID, LOG, OLD, PCH, POB, TMP.

Displaying Menus Quickly: Pressing the keyboard combination [ displays the context menu for selected elements, while the key combination [ shows the control menu of the active window.

An incorrectly applied drag and drop action can be cancelled without any consequences by pressing [ while the left mouse button is pressed.

QTTabBar can also do a whole lot more. When you hover your cursor over a folder icon, a blue arrow icon will appear next to it. Windows Explorer will show the subordinate folder structure in a menu when you click on this icon, and when you click on an entry in this menu, Explorer will jump to the selected folder. The ‘QTTabBar Standard Buttons’ icon bar contains buttons for quick access to the program’s standard commands. Select ‘View I Toolbars I DTTab Bar Standard Buttons’ to open the bar.

Displaying Outlook reminders and mails continuously

Important reminders and emails easily get buried under numerous application windows on the screen, causing you to miss a meeting.Keep important schedules and emails in direct view with a sidebar gadget, eliminating the need to frequently switch to Outlook to check the Inbox. The gadget mentioned here work together with Outlook 2003 and
2007.

To install the free gadget, go to the gallery.live.com website, type ‘Outlook’ in the search field and press the (Enter]. You will find the sidebar gadget on the results page. Click on ‘Download’ and ‘install’. Select ‘Open’ in the next dialog box and confirm the installation.

You can even configure the sidebar tool as per your preferences. Here’s how: simply right-click on it and select ‘Options’. Set the ‘Personal Folder’ for the ‘Mailbox’ and subsequently ‘Inbox’ next to it. Set the ‘Calendar’ to the Outlook calendar of your choice in the same way. Once you confirm the same with ‘OK’, your current tasks and schedule reminders will be made available at a glance and you will know whether any unread mails are waiting for you in the inbox. In addition, you can view important reminders on your desktop even if Outlook has not been opened at all.

How to access frequently used system folders instantaneously

As an experienced user, you frequently work in system folders such as ‘System3 ‘My Network Places’ and ‘Programs’, but find navigating through the Windows Explorer directory structure very annoying

You can open the desired folder directly in Explorer using some shortcuts. To do this, open the ‘Start -Run...’ dialog under XP, or ‘Start - All Programs- Accessories -Run’ under Vista. The Run dialog box can also be accessed using the keyboard combination [ in both. Type ‘shell:<Name>’ in the input field and confirm the same with ‘OK’.

Doing this is much faster than inputting the entire directory path in the address bar. For instance, the command ‘shell:profile’ opens the profile folder in Windows Explorer, where profile is the name for the folder path would be something like ‘C:\Documents and Settings\Digitalmalay’ .The table below shows which name specifies which folder. Even Windows Environment Variables work just like these names. A list of all defined Environment Variables can be obtained by opening the prompt using ‘cmd. exe’ in the ‘Run’ dialog, and typing the command ‘set’.

Switching on system turbo by dividing the swap file for Windows Vista,XP and 2000

When physical RAM is completely consumed, Windows data is temporarily shifted to the hard drive. This can greatly slow down the computer, because the hard disk has to work continuously.If it looks like the RAM is going to get full, it’s advisable to split the swap file onto different, newly defragmented hard drives. Windows can write to several hard drives simultaneously and thus accelerate the data transfer process. However, this makes sense only if you use multiple physical disks and not just partitions, since this will force the disk to write to multiple areas, thereby slowing down access. First determine which of your drives are separate physically and which are just partitions.

For this purpose, go to ‘Control Panel I Administrative Tools I Computer management’. In the tree view structure on the left side of the window, navigate to ‘Storage I Disk Management’. You will now see the physically divided data drives on the bottom right with their corresponding partitions and the allocated logical drives. In addition to the system drive ‘C:’. search for the primary partitions of the other physical drives, note their drive letters and then close the Disk Management window.

For configuring the swap tile, double click on the ‘System’ icon in the Control Panel and switch to the ‘Advanced’ tab—or click on the ‘Advanced System Settings’ link in Vista. Click on ‘Settings’ under ‘Performance’. Activate the ‘Advanced’ tab and then under ‘Virtual Memory’, click ‘Change’. Disable the ‘System managed size’ option, select the desired drive in the dialog box above, and then select ‘Custom size’ and enter the desired value in the two subsequent fields, for example ‘1024’ megabyte each. Equal values for the minimum and maximum limit define a fixed size, making it impossible for the swap file to fragment the partition. Click ‘Set’. Repeat this procedure for other drives. Confirm the setting with ‘OK’. Restart the system for Windows to apply the settings.

CAUTION: You cannot create swap files on external hard disks and memory cards.

It appears that SONY once again put their bets on PSP.Recently a video showing a redesigned PSP with a sliding screen and no UMD optical drive through youtube. This leaked video actually confirm months of rumros and speculation in the video games community, reports Reuters.Is this new video PSP GO will be reaching us this June 2009?

Given the named PSP Go, the new PSP machine is smaller than the current PSP and conceals its control buttons with a sliding panel. It sports a 3.8" screen, 16 GB of on-board memory, and Bluetooth connectivity, and is substantially lighter than the current model.

But perhaps the biggest change is the removal of the PSP's much-criticized UMD optical drive, which added bulk to the system and reduced battery life. Instead of buying games on disk from stores, PSP Go owners will download them straight to the machine's internal memory, in a manner very similar to the iPhone's App Store.

Although there's no confirmation from Sony that the video is genuine, it's pretty much certain. It's apparently footage from an upcoming episode of Qore, a Sony-endorsed video magazine that's published on the official Playstation web site. If it's not real, it's the best-produced fake we've ever seen.Best ever prank in history!hehe

How to setting the default program for file associations using Windows Vista

Accidentally selecting an application as the default program for file types during the installation process gives you a ton of headaches. Set the file associations to their former state in a few easy steps.

Associating file types with default programs to open them in is done in two very different ways in Vista and XP. In Vista, there is no ‘File types’ tab in the ‘Folder Options’ window, so users familiar with XP may find themselves lost while trying to set default programs. In order to change the setting, right-click on any file and select ‘Properties’ from the context menu. Click on ‘Change’ under the ‘General’ tab and select the new program in the following dialog box. Confirm with ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’. You will get a list of current associations when you double-click on the ‘Default Programs’ icon in the Control Panel and click ‘Associate a file type or protocol with a program’. However, it isn’t possible to delete an association. This can be done only by changing the relevant registry entries.

This tweaking can be done effortlessly using the free program ExtMan, available at extman.qc-home. com. To use the program, uncompress the downloadable archive, and simply run the file ‘Extman.exe’. It does not require any installation. Confirm the User Account Control prompt to start the program, then find the desired file extension in the list and click on ‘Delete extension’. Alternatively, you can click ‘Edit Extension’ and select the ‘Open’ command from the subsequent dialog box and click ‘Delete’. Once you confirm it with ‘Yes’, the incorrect association or disassociated entry is removed.

If you do not wish to use Extman, then, changes can be made directly in the registry itself. Type ‘regedit’ in the search field of the Start menu, right- click on the program icon and select ‘Run as administrator’. Navigate to the key ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\ Explorer\FileExts’. Search for and select the key of the relevant file extension, for instance, ‘.dat’. This can be removed by clicking ‘Edit I Delete’. Only the settings of the active user are lost while doing so, and the filetype gets disassociated again.
